“The color of the year” is announced by a paint company calls Pantone, it happens every year, usually in the fall, sometimes in December. For this time the company has chosen a vibrant purple shade, named “Ultra Violet”, as its color of the year for 2018.
The Pantone Colour Institute has been choosing a color of the year since 1999. They start global research early in the spring, looking for recurring patterns or colors in daily life situations, the process takes nearly nine months. Last year, the color experts at Pantone declared “Greenery” the official shade of 2017, it was symbolic of new beginnings.
In order to determine this year color, Pantone sent out ten of their aficionados to scour clothing, cosmetics, food, cars and everything in between for signs on what shade will dominate the next 12 months.
In a press statement, Pantone described the hue as a “dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade,” that “communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.” Pantone Color Institute’s vice president, Laurie Pressman, then went on to add, “It’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today.”
Mixing blue and red, two shades that are seemingly opposed, to create something new, Ultra Violet is one of the most complex colors. After the Spring 2018 fashion season, trend forecasters even included the purple color in their reports with design houses such as Gucci, Rochas, La Perla, Loewe and more designing and sending brilliant ultra-violet looks down the runway.
